Araghchi: NAM Countries Consider the Snapback Mechanism Illegal

Iran’s Foreign Minister announced on the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) foreign ministers’ meeting in Uganda that the member states of this movement—comprising more than 100 countries—have supported Iran’s position in rejecting the “snapback” mechanism, reaffirming the validity of UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

Nournews: Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, told reporters in Kampala: “Today, the meeting of the foreign ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement was held in Uganda. The NAM addresses all global issues, including economic, social, and political development matters.”

He added: “The final declaration or outcome document contains more than 1,500 paragraphs. At the proposal of the Islamic Republic of Iran, additional clauses were included, the most important of which strongly condemn the attacks by the Zionist regime and the United States against the Islamic Republic of Iran. Terms such as ‘heinous’ and ‘unacceptable attacks’ were used, and solidarity with Iran was also expressed.”

The foreign minister continued: “This condemnation was issued separately in the Kampala Declaration and also included in the final document of the ministerial meeting. Moreover, the attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities has its own specific clause, and the terrorist operation in Lebanon involving communication devices—referring to the pager incidents—was also condemned.”

He emphasized: “Another clause, both in the meeting and in the final document, carries exceptional importance. It declares support for the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding the snapback issue at the Security Council, stating that from the perspective of the Non-Aligned Movement, Resolution 2231 remains valid and its provisions and timeline must be observed. According to paragraph eight, on the scheduled date—October 17 —the resolution should expire.”

Araghchi concluded: “This clearly aligns with the position of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Russia, China, and some other Security Council members, opposing that of the United States and European countries, who claim that the snapback has been triggered. In essence, this rejects the snapback mechanism as illegal and asserts that it has not taken effect. The resolution should expire on October 18 . This is truly a significant achievement for the Islamic Republic of Iran, as almost all NAM members—over 100 countries—have supported this stance.”
