Iran becomes member of Advisory Committee of the United Nations Human Rights Council

Afsaneh Nadipour, an Iranian career diplomat, was elected on Wednesday as a member of the Advisory Committee of the United Nations Human Rights Council upon a unanimous decision by the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Nadipour is the former Iranian ambassador to Denmark and a senior diplomat of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Ali Bahreini, Iran's ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, wrote in a post on his X account, while congratulating Afsaneh Nadipour on her election, "This is the first time since the establishment of the UN Human Rights Council that a representative from our country has become a member of the Human Rights Council's Advisory Committee."

The UN Human Rights Council Advisory Committee is composed of 18 independent experts from five UN regional groups and serves as the intellectual arm of the Human Rights Council. Nominations are made by governments and are selected by the Council.

The election takes place at the September session of the Council, and the elected members serve for a three-year term (renewable once).
