Iran acquits French-German national of espionage charges

A Iranian court has acquitted dual German-French national Lennart Monterlos of espionage charges linked to the recent 12-day US-Israeli war on the country.

Monterlos, who was arrested during the 12-day US-Israeli war in June on suspicion of spying, was tried by the Revolutionary Court in Bandar Abbas, the head of Hormozgan Province’s judiciary Mojtaba Ghasemi said on Monday.

“Despite the indictment issued by the prosecutor’s office, the court -- considering legal principles and doubts about the alleged offense -- ruled for the defendant’s acquittal,” Ghasemi said.

According to reports by foreign media, including Reuters, the Iranian official added that the prosecutor retains the legal right to appeal the verdict. “The judiciary of Hormozgan remains committed to handling espionage and infiltration cases with precision and decisiveness whenever wrongdoing is proven,” he said.

According to the report by Reuters, Monterlos, 19, was arrested on June 16 in the southern city of Bandar Abbas on the third day of the imposed US-Israeli war.
