World Wrestling Championships 2025: Farrokhi, Mirzazadeh strike gold, Ahmadi claims silver

Iranian athletes grab two gold medals and a silver at 2025 World Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships, carrying forward the winning streak after the national freestyle wrestlers earned the country the world’s team title.

The medals blazed across the Iranian Greco-Roman wrestlers’ chests on Friday, the second day of the World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia.

Gholamreza Farrokhi, competing in the 82-kg weight category, seized the country’s first gold medal after defeating his Georgian opponent, Gela Bolkvadze in the final 4-0.

Amin Mirzazadeh, Iran’s representative in the 130-kg division, also claimed the world title by overcoming his Hungarian rival, Dariusz Vitek.

Payam Ahmadi, Iran’s 55-kg class Greco-Roman wrestler, earned the silver after falling short against Georgian opponent, Vakhtang Lolua.

The 2025 World Wrestling Championships are being held in the Croatian capital from September 13 to 21.

Earlier, Iran's national freestyle wrestlers secured the team championship at the tournament, wresting five medals that clinched them the title ahead of schedule.

Upon the victory, the wrestlers were congratulated by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei for “their astonishing efforts and admirable behavior.”

“The combination of strength and spirituality creates noble values. Well done to you!" Ayatollah Khamenei stated in a message issued on the occasion.
