Third round of Iran-IAEA technical talks held in Vienna

The third round of technical negotiations between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was held in Vienna to work on drafting a procedure for implementing safeguards commitments under the new circumstances, Iran’s envoy to the agency says.

Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the IAEA, Reza Najafi, said on Saturday that the two-day talks took place on Friday and Saturday, in the wake of the illegal attacks by Israel and the United States on Iran’s nuclear facilities, and in line with a statute passed by the Iranian Parliament.

He noted that the two sides exchanged views on the details of the draft procedure.

In June, the Parliament passed legislation requiring the suspension of cooperation with the IAEA after the 12-day war on Iran and in protest at the agency’s failure to condemn the war.

Under the law, the administration is obliged to halt cooperation until specific conditions outlined in the statute are met.

Iran and the IAEA have recently launched negotiations to define a new framework for their future engagement.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Iran is seeking to design a new path forward, stressing that cooperation with the IAEA cannot remain unchanged after the attacks that targeted the country’s nuclear facilities.
