In a joint statement issued early Saturday after receiving details of Trump’s talks with Putin, the leaders said they supported efforts to halt the bloodshed in Ukraine and achieve a just and lasting peace.
The signatories included French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Finnish President Kai Stubb, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa. They also expressed readiness to join a proposed three-way summit involving Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders.
The statement stressed the importance of ongoing talks between Trump and Zelenskyy, saying Ukraine must receive strong security guarantees to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, without restrictions on its defensive capabilities or international partnerships.
The leaders reiterated that Russia cannot block Ukraine’s path to membership in the European Union and NATO, and that altering international borders by force violates fundamental global norms. They vowed to keep up diplomatic and economic pressure on Moscow until a just and lasting peace is secured, calling their support for Kyiv unwavering.
“Ukraine can count on Europe’s firm solidarity in securing a peace that protects the vital security interests of both Ukraine and Europe,” the statement concluded.
