Shooting at sound, image, and narrative

Shooting at sound, image, and narrative

The martyrdom of Anas al-Sharif and more than 230 other journalists by the Zionist regime is not merely the elimination of an individual or a group, but a deliberate, planned attempt to assassinate truth, transparency, and the awakening of the global conscience. Only through continuous exposure and global condemnation can this anti-human policy be defeated, and journalists be supported as the primary guardians of the right to information and justice.

Nournews : The recent airstrike by the Zionist regime on a media tent near al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza—which resulted in the martyrdom of Anas al-Sharif, a prominent Al Jazeera journalist, along with several of his colleagues—is a clear and painful symbol of a policy that has been carried out for years against independent journalists in Palestine, particularly in Gaza. This event is not merely an unfortunate and isolated incident; rather, it is part of a systematic and targeted strategy in which the elimination of journalists and the control of the war narrative are used as primary tools to suppress truth and the free flow of information.

Since the beginning of the bloody war on Gaza in October 2023, more than 230 Palestinian journalists in Gaza have lost their lives—each of them a voice for the voiceless and an eyewitness to this humanitarian crisis. This shocking number reflects the scope and intensity of the Zionist regime’s systematic attacks on journalists and media workers. Names such as Anas al-Sharif of Al Jazeera, Hossam Mubarak of Al-Aqsa TV, Mohammad Sabbouh, a photojournalist with the Palestine News Agency, Doaa Sharaf, a presenter at Al-Aqsa Radio, and Bilal Jadallah, director of the Palestinian Press House, are only a few prominent examples. Their martyrdom, symbols of resistance and honesty in documenting reality, vividly shows the deliberate removal of the narrators of truth.

In order to justify these inhumane actions and the suppression of media, the Zionist regime often resorts to baseless and unsubstantiated accusations, such as “collaboration with armed groups” or “membership in Hamas,” in an attempt to tarnish the image of journalists. In the case of Anas al-Sharif, the claim that he led a Hamas cell—without presenting any credible evidence—was used to legitimize his assassination. This method of security labeling is one of Tel Aviv’s main tools to justify the physical elimination of independent journalists, revealing the depth of its hostile policy against the free flow of information.

Methods of suppressing media and the free flow of information

In addition to directly targeting journalists, the Zionist regime employs a wide range of complex and extensive methods to suppress the free flow of information, including:

Physical elimination of journalists: Through repeated airstrikes and shelling of journalists’ locations and media offices, such as the assassination of Shireen Abu Akleh in 2022, the bombing of Al Jazeera and Associated Press offices in al-Jalaa Tower, and now the killing of Anas al-Sharif.
Attacking media infrastructure and cutting communications: Bombing key media offices and deliberately cutting internet and telecommunications—especially during ground operations—to prevent the transmission of real-time news and images from the battlefield.
Restricting access for foreign journalists: Blocking the entry of foreign reporters and hindering independent coverage to impose a one-sided, controlled narrative of the war.
Psychological warfare and discrediting journalists: Spreading unfounded accusations via media and social networks to erode public trust in journalists and their reporting.
Engineering the dominant media narrative: Using influence in major newsrooms and media lobbies to shape language, sanitize coverage, and hide images of civilian suffering.

Only through solidarity, heightened public awareness, and persistent pressure can this anti-human policy be defeated, ensuring that journalists remain the foremost defenders of the right to information and justice.
