Active Neighborhood Diplomacy: Pezeshkian’s Strategic Visit to Pakistan

NOURNEWS – Masoud Pezeshkian’s visit to Islamabad comes at a time when Iran and Pakistan are charting a new course for political, economic, and security cooperation within the framework of a shifting regional order—an agenda that spans from expanding trade and combating terrorism to supporting the Palestinian cause.

The Iranian president’s official trip to Pakistan is far more than a ceremonial gesture; it signals the serious intent of both nations to elevate their relations to a strategic level. The presence of a high-ranking political and economic delegation underscores a focus on comprehensive bilateral development—especially following the recent visit of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to Tehran, which marked a key step toward establishing regular and reciprocal dialogue. Drawing on deep civilizational, cultural, and religious commonalities, the two countries hold significant potential to build an indigenous model of neighborhood diplomacy.

Economy: Driving Force Behind Convergence and Resilience

With a 13.6% growth in bilateral trade, the economy now serves as the main engine of relations between Tehran and Islamabad. Iran’s triple share in the positive trade balance and the mutual goal of pushing the trade volume beyond $3 billion reflect a dynamic trajectory of economic collaboration. Reviving border terminals and local marketplaces, strengthening port cooperation in Chabahar and Makran, and focusing on the development of border provinces are key elements that could position Iran and Pakistan as a central hub linking Central Asia, South Asia, and the Persian Gulf. The implementation of the Peace Pipeline also holds strategic promise as a long-term guarantee for regional energy security.

Collective Security: A Response to Shared Threats

The long border between Iran and Pakistan, their proximity to Afghanistan, and the threats posed by terrorism and extra-regional interference underscore the urgent need to strengthen security cooperation. Existing defense agreements, joint military exercises, and efforts to repatriate Afghan migrants are all rooted in mutual trust on security matters. The history of Iran and Pakistan’s mutual support during regional crises—from the war in Gaza to the Kashmir conflict—points to a shared strategic understanding of common threats. This security linkage between Tehran and Islamabad not only supports bilateral stability but also offers a framework for region-focused security in West Asia.

Regional and Global Convergence Against Hegemony

As the emerging global order shifts toward regional cooperation and multilateral organizations like BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, countries like Iran and Pakistan are playing increasingly prominent roles. Their memberships, close ties with major powers like China and Russia, and participation in major initiatives such as the Belt and Road project enhance the legitimacy and effectiveness of their anti-hegemonic policies. Meanwhile, the unified stance of Tehran and Islamabad against Israeli occupation and in support of Gaza underscores their resistance-driven and justice-oriented alignment—both regionally and globally.
