From Tehran to Moscow: Behind the Collapse of Western Diplomatic Credibility

NOURNEWS – Russia’s sharp escalation of drone and missile strikes on Ukraine, alongside repeated U.S. betrayals in diplomacy, signals Moscow’s shift toward a power-based strategy—one in which trust in the West and international institutions has all but vanished.

The unprecedented Russian attacks, involving the launch of hundreds of drones and missiles targeting Kyiv and Ukrainian military infrastructure, suggest that Moscow has effectively abandoned the diplomatic track. This strategic turn comes after repeated but fruitless negotiations with the U.S. and Ukraine. Continued Western arms shipments to Kyiv convinced Moscow that only force—not dialogue—can alter the battlefield. The recent bombardments, which caused heavy casualties, were not just military strikes—they sent a clear message to the West: the era of appeasement is over.

America’s Betrayal: From Trump to NATO

Donald Trump, once a vocal advocate for ending wars, has played a central role in escalating the conflict by backing Ukraine’s air defense buildup and pressuring Europe to increase military support. Meanwhile, the U.S.'s moves through NATO—including raising member states’ defense budgets—reflect the West’s determination to maintain military pressure on Russia. Moscow has come to see institutions like NATO as tools of American hegemony and instruments for expanding Western influence. From Russia’s perspective, the steady flow of weapons from Europe to Ukraine is a deliberate effort to prolong a proxy war and gradually erode Russia’s military strength.

Diplomacy as Deception: A Shared Experience for Iran and Russia

Russia closely observed the nuclear negotiations between Iran and the U.S., watching Washington’s pattern of broken promises, manipulation, and aggression unfold. From U.S. support for Israeli strikes on Iran to the bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities, it became clear to Moscow that Washington honors no agreement. This shared experience has convinced both Tehran and Moscow that American diplomacy serves merely as a smokescreen for continued pressure and hostile actions. Russia has now drawn the same conclusion as Iran: only through indigenous power and decisive response can national security be safeguarded. With that in mind, Moscow has opted to escalate its operations in Ukraine to solidify its military strategy on the ground.

Collapse of International Institutions: End of Legitimacy

The deafening silence of international organizations in the face of Israeli crimes against Iran and the genocide in Gaza—contrasted with their swift condemnation of Russian attacks on Ukraine—has once again laid bare the hypocrisy and loss of credibility of these bodies. The UN Secretary-General, who refused to condemn aggression against Iran, now poses as a champion of nuclear safety in Ukraine. These double standards have led many independent nations to conclude that international institutions lack both neutrality and authority—and can no longer be counted on to uphold global peace. This erosion of trust has fueled growing calls in political circles to withdraw from Western-dominated agencies and to redefine global security frameworks outside the constructs imposed by the West.
