Iran urges the world to condemn US aggression against nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards

Ali Bahreini, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations Office in Geneva, in a letter to the United Nations Independent Expert on the Promotion of a Democratic and Equitable International Order, called for the explicit condemnation of the recent U.S. military aggression against Iran’s safeguarded nuclear facilities.

The U.S. attack on nuclear sites in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan, all under full supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), constitutes a blatant violation of Article 2(4) of the U.N. Charter and fundamental principles of international law, the letter reads.

Bahreini warned that these aggressive acts not only target the basic principles of the global order but also the right of the Iranian people to live in peace, dignity, and security.

These developments represent a dangerous sign of replacing law with force and multilateralism with unilateralism, he said.

The failure of responsible institutions to clearly identify and condemn these actions calls into question their legitimacy and impartiality, undermining the international legal order, the envoy said.

Highlighting the crucial role of U.N. special rapporteurs in upholding international law, Bahreini said, “Your principled and courageous leadership will send a clear message to violators of sovereignty and global peace.”

Early on Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed American B-2 bombers had conducted airstrikes on the three Iranian nuclear facilities. Meanwhile, all U.S. bases in the West Asia region have been put on high alert in anticipation of Iran’s response to the United States’ entry into the Israeli war of aggression on Iran.

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran said in a statement that enemies have struck nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan in contravention of international law, the Non-Proliferation Treaty in particular.

“The international community is expected to, while condemning the [instances of] lawlessness based on the law of the jungle, accompany Iran in reclaiming its rights,” the statement reads.
