Iran wins Greco-Roman wrestling world championship after 11 years

Iran’s Greco-Roman wrestling team has won the championship title at the 2025 Wrestling World Championships in Croatia, securing victory ahead of schedule with an impressive medal tally.

Amin Mirzazadeh and Gholamreza Farrokhi, competing in the 130 kg and 82 kg weight categories, respectively, delivered outstanding performances, securing two gold medals for their team.

Payam Ahmadi, a young prodigy competing in the 55 kg weight category, won a silver medal.

Mohammad Hadi Saravi, the Olympic gold medalist, is set to compete in the finals on Saturday evening and is tipped to clinch the third gold medal for Team Iran at Zagreb.

Danial Sohrabi secured the first bronze medal for Iran on Saturday, beating his Armenian counterpart 7-0 in a commanding fashion.

Among other wrestlers who took to the mat on Saturday, Olympic champion in the 67kg division, Saeed Emaeili, after a first-round bye, beat Sebastian Nad of Serbia 9-0 in the second round.He went on to defeat Shermukhammad Shribjanov of Uzbekistan 8-0 to reach the quarterfinals, where he overcame Howard Jorgensen of Norway 8-0, advancing to the semifinals.

Alireza Mohammadi defeated Hans Wagner of Germany 5-1 in the first round, followed by an 11-3 victory over Daniel Alexandrov of Bulgaria in the second round to reach the quarterfinals.

There, he won 4-1 against Asan Zhanishov of Kyrgyzstan to advance to the semifinals, where he will face David Losonci, the World Championship runner-up from Hungary.

Mohammadmahdi Keshtkar, after a first-round bye, defeated Bushing Huang of China 2-1 in the second round to advance to the quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinals, he triumphed 8-0 over Murad Mammadov of Azerbaijan, a silver and bronze medalist at the World Championships, securing a spot in the semifinals.

In a message, Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian congratulated the Greco-Roman wrestling team on the historic title win, lauding the wrestlers and the coaching staff for their hard work and dedication.

"Our brave and talented athletes once again shone at the Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships in Zagreb, bringing pride to Iran with their skill, determination, and spectacular performances," read the message.

The Greco-Roman world title came days after Iran’s freestyle wrestlers also scripted history by winning the championship title after 12 years with record seven medals.

Iran rose to the top with 145 points, followed by the US with 134 points and Japan with 111 points.

It marks the first time in the history of Iranian wrestling that both the freestyle and Greco-Roman teams have secured the world championship title in the same year.
