Wall Street Journal: Reinstatement of U.N. sanctions against Iran may be postponed

The Wall Street Journal has also stated that the reinstatement of sanctions against Iran may be postponed on the condition that negotiations between Tehran and Washington are resumed. Iran’s full cooperation with the agency is among the other main conditions.

A spokesperson for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reacted to the upcoming visit of the agency’s technical team to Iran.
Kazem Gharibabadi, the Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, announced on Thursday that Iran has agreed to the visit of a technical delegation from the agency to Tehran in the coming weeks. However, he added that they will not visit Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Following the act of aggression against Iran by the U.S. and Israel — which was facilitated by a report from IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi — Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, had announced that cooperation with the agency would no longer be the same as in the past.

In response to a Wall Street Journal inquiry about the planned presence of the U.N. nuclear watchdog’s technical team in Iran, a spokesperson for the IAEA said, “They would not comment on the issue.”

However, he noted that the Director General of the IAEA has emphasized “the need to achieve a diplomatic solution based on fact-checking and the agency’s unavoidable oversight” to all parties.

Earlier, Araghchi had stated that the Americans had betrayed diplomacy and, in the midst of negotiations, attacked Iran. He stressed that if negotiations are resumed, the U.S. must provide guarantees that such an attack will not happen again.

France, Germany, and the UK — three members of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) — had warned that if no progress is made on a new nuclear deal with Iran, they would reinstate U.N. sanctions against the country.

Iran has also warned that if the West takes such action, options such as withdrawing from the NPT will be on the table.
The Wall Street Journal has also stated that the reinstatement of sanctions against Iran may be postponed on the condition that negotiations between Tehran and Washington are resumed. Iran’s full cooperation with the agency is among the other main conditions.
