Throughout history, especially during the Safavid and Qajar eras, Birjand played an important role in trade in eastern Iran and in connections with India. It has also been known as one of the cultural and scientific centers of South Khorasan. Its historical attractions include the Kolah Farangi Citadel (Kolah Farangi Arg), Shokatiyeh School (one of the oldest modern schools in Iran), Birjand Castle, and the Akbarieh Garden, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
